Carol’s Journey, Part I: Carol and June start their journey back to housing

Hi friends,

Over the next few weeks, you’ll receive four journal entries from Carol and her daughter, June, as they navigate their lives after becoming newly homeless. Carol & June are fictional characters whose story is informed by real stories we hear from people we serve every day.

Carol is newly homeless after living in Capitola for 12 years. She is eager to get back on her feet and put this all behind her. More from Carol:

I’m writing today from the library; it’s cozy in here. It’s been a tough couple of weeks, but I think I’m finally on a path forward. Earlier today I did an assessment at Housing Matters so I can get some help. Honestly, at first, I just didn’t know where to turn; I really thought I’d find a new place before we had to move out. I think I was just in shock that I was sleeping in my car. My daughter June is staying with her dad for a little bit. It’s not the best situation, but at least she has a roof over her head. I miss seeing her every day. I miss our home. I’m just hoping I can hang onto my job through all this. I feel like everything is so precarious right now. More later.

Carol’s story isn’t over yet. Check back next week for Part II.

Housing Matters has helped over 550 people resolve their homelessness and get into permanent housing in the last two years alone. Read their stories >
